Market Update: Will my town face high electricity bills through the fall?

Texas Towns May See Warmer Fall

Even in a hot summer, temperatures can usually depend where you are in Texas. That also means that different towns and cities in different utility areas have different rates. Keeping an eye on local rates can help you find the best deals on the market. But sometimes it can seem complicated.

Natural gas runs most of the state's generators. So, historically speaking the price of electricity is higher in the summer because so much natural gas is being used to fuel generators. Energy prices tend to go down in the fall as demand eases.

But this year is way different. The price of natural gas has stayed quite low and with new generators and renewables (wind/solar) coming online in Texas, electricity rates stayed low. Even with wholesale prices spiking every so often, average Texas electricity rates have been lower than last year. (Source 1)

However, natural gas rates could increase later this fall and into 2024. (Source 2) This would raise electricity rates as well. You might not use as much electricity by the end of November, but if you don't have a fixed rate plan lined up, it might cost you more per kWh.

Your best bet is to sign up for a 12 month fixed rate plan now. This way, you can lock down the current low rates and keep your monthly bills low for the next year. You can even shop for longer term plans and save even more.
